William Bradford became the second Governor of the Colony in the winter of 1620 – 1621 following the death of Elder William Brewster who had been elected governor before the voyage began.  Bradford kept a detailed journal of the first twenty years of the Colony.  This journal, Of Plimoth Plantation has been preserved and translated into modern English.  The quote below is found in his Journal.

"As one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shown unto many, yea, in some sort to our whole nation, let the glorious name of Jehovah have all the praise."

     -- Gov. William Bradford
